Hotel Vila-Sintra - Sintra - Housing
The conception of the proposal derives from the implicit orientations in the order of the urban morphology of the place. Thus, the present proposal seeks to fill an urban void that presents itself as a “wound” in the landscape of the historical village of Sintra. This “wound” is emphasized by the existence of big gable areas in the adjoining buildings, which visibly await the continuation of the already built organic grid.
The incompleteness of the urban fabric, as it presents itself today, imposes on this particularly noble hillside the view of late elevations, which, although preserved, deeply disturbs the image of this magnificent landscape.
This proposal presents a solution that follows the built alignment of Calçada do Pelourinho, thus contributing to the definition of this "Street". It also follows the typomorphological rule implicit in the site.
A proposta procura minimizar o impacto da empena cega do edifício pré-existente, propondo a construção de um corpo edificado justaposto a esta empena, dando em simultânea continuidade à lógica da morfologia urbana presente no sítio.
The proposal seeks to minimize the impact of the pre-existing building's blind gable, proposing the construction of a built body juxtaposed to this gable, giving simultaneously continuity to the logic of the urban morphology present in the site.
A central body articulates the two lateral volumes of the building. These were designed to deal will the existing gables and were generated from the present morphological/urban rule. This central body "turns" to the valley and is deployed parallel to the lines of elevation. It’s huge and vertical windows were designed to relate with the landscape scale of the place and with the architectural language of Sintra’s great houses.
The "palace" typology is defined in Sintra as a quasi canonical model, especially in the areas surrounding the central nuclei, where larger lots allow this typology to be developed. This is also the predominant typology in the valley, although it may present, here as in the areas of more compact fabric, significant simplifications.
A particularly meaningful design situation is the advanced "corner" of the body that develops along Calçada do Pelourinho. This street does the transition from the compact Street the transition between the compact fabric and the sparser fabric of the valley. A corner window draws this particularly significant wedge, underlining its importance with an element that is not unrelated to the subliminal influence of the design of Palácio da Vila.
